Yes, John Beatty was high-bidder when the U.S.E. declared the Fernbank marine repair station at old Lock 37 as "surplus property". He took possession in October 1955. Some repairs to the facility were needed (it had been built in 1920-21 and had been mostly dormant since 1946). But it was an ideal setup for a marine salvor!
