Default Howard Steamboat Museum - Fall Into Art Exhibition

The annual Fall Into Art exhibition at the Howard Steamboat Museum opens next Sunday (October 31st) with a reception from 1:00 until 4:00 PM. The theme of this year's exhibit, curated by Lynn Renau, with a fabulous catalog done by Warren and Julie Payne, is THE HOWARDS' WORLD: A COLLECTORS' TRIBUTE.

Focusing on the history of the steamboat building Howard family and their world, collectors from the region have lent paintings and artifacts to recreate the history of river transportation and its effect on the arts from the early 19th century to the mid 20th century.

Included in the exhibition are an 1876 Harvey Joiner riverscape and an 1877 John Botto landscape, along with an 1833 watercolor of the Louisville waterfront. Also featured are a drawing by early panorama artist John Banvard, a rare portrait of actress Mary Anderson and a door sized steamboat oil by George Morrison, a painter who came to New Albany in 1840.

Other artists represented include Carl Brenner, Marvin Eddy, Sophia DeButts Gray, John Ramsier, Charles Bullet, John Bauscher, Bruno Alberts, Harlan Hubbard and C. Winston Haberer. Hand carved furniture, painted china, stained glass, tile and other accoutrements of late Victorian life are also featured.

Special programs each Sunday at 2:00 PM are as follows:

October 31 - Art historian Estill Curtis Pennington: Steamboat Gothic
November 7 - Panel - Steamboat Stoneware - Crocks and Jugs
November 14 - Panel - Bragging Rights - Bring a Treasure

The exhibition and programs are free. A nominal admission fee is charged for those attendees who wish to tour the museum. A full color catalog of the exhibition will be available for purchase in the museum gift shop. Refreshments will be served in the dining room.

For further information, visit the museum website by clicking Howard Steamboat Museum - Home Page or calling 812.283.3728. The museum is located at 1101 East Market Street in Jeffersonville, Indiana, opposite Jeffboat. Regular museum hours are Tues-Sat, 10:00-4:00 PM and Sunday, 1:00-4:00 PM. Closed on Monday.

We look forward to seeing you!
