Default Opposition steamers

Way's Packet Directory, #2536 HARRY D. KNOX, reads:

In 1894 sold to Monongahela River where Capt. Charles Menges was master in Charleroi-Rice's Landing trade, in opposition to LENI LEOTI.

Can somebody explain the "opposition" packet trade? I've seen multiple references to this sort of operation, both on the Western Rivers and on the Sacramento. Were they boats owned by the same company that ran in the same trade, or were they competing firms?
