Indeed, as a shallow draft sternwheeler in the cotton trade, the WM. GARIG (built in 1904 at Howard's) could "float on a heavy dew" and traverse most any waterway.

Herewith are several images of the GOLDEN EAGLE in her earlier life as the cotton packet WM. GARIG. Note her wide guards for carrying cotton bales. She was altered when the Eagle Packet Company purchased her following the loss of their big steamers ALTON, GREY EAGLE and PEORIA in the 1917-18 ice at Paducah, where they had been taken, thinking it was a safe harbor.
