Like the showboat melodramas once performed in her former boiler room, the saga of the BECKY THATCHER (formerly the Str. MISSISSIPPI) continues to take further twists and turns.
The Marietta Times reports today that the city is moving forward on evicting the BECKY from the old sternwheeler's Muskingum River landing, her mooring place since she was towed to Marietta from St. Louis in August, 1975.
Complicating matters is the low river stage, which has the BECKY somewhat aground, posing the possibility of damage to the hull if she is moved. The owner said he had plans to tow the boat a couple hundred miles upstream, but declined to name the exact location. Moving the boat also involves turning the old railroad bridge and other logistics.
The BECKY remains for sale, the current price being $239,000.
