Get a copy of Perilous Journeys: A History of Steamboating on theChattahoochie, Apalachicola and Flint Rivers, 1828-1928, by Edward A. Mueller. It is well-written, well-researched and exhaustive. Mueller still lives and may be able to provide a clue.
