Default New River Museum Opens at Grand Tower, IL

The Mississippi River Museum and Interpretive Center at Grand Tower, Illinois opened on May 3rd. The museum is housed in an 1892 building overlooking the levee on Front Street. Director of the museum is Capt. Jack Knupp, who served as a towboat captain for 44 years.

Exhibits in the new museum include steamboat models, buoys, carbon arc searchlight, radar unit, deck equipment, gauges, rudder, dishes, etc. Of special interest are artifacts salvaged from the Str. GOLDEN EAGLE, which sank at Grand Tower in 1947. The fledgling museum has received no grant money for support; all funds have been raised by the people of Grand Tower, the census in 2000 being 624. Capt. Knupp said that over 200 people from Grand Tower have worked on the river and the citizens value the importance of preserving their river heritage. A future project for the museum will be to videotape resident's stories of life on the river.

Currently, the museum is open Saturday and Sunday from 2:00 until 4:00 PM. Tours can also be scheduled by calling Capt. Knupp at 618-565-2227.

A whistle salute to the new river museum and to all those whose dedicated work has brought it to fruition.
