Default Historic Steamboat Paintings by Ralph Law For Sale

Mrs. Marie Groffel, of St. Louis, has asked me to publicize, in her behalf, that she has two paintings, by Ralph Law, available for sale. The paintings, done in the early 1960's are of the Eagle Packet Company steamboats SPREAD EAGLE and BALD EAGLE. Law's art is valuable and much sought after by collectors of steamboat memorabilia. His works hang in many museums and private collections.

Ralph Law, who painted numerous steamboat and river scenes, passed away in 1975, after collapsing with a heart attack while shoveling snow. Like Capt. Lexie Palmore and the late Dorothea Frye, Law had great affection for -- and knowledge of -- riverboats and was highly attentive to details that other artists easily overlook, making his paintings all the more authentic and pleasing to river people.

Marie is the widow of John Groffel, a St. Louis steel company executive, who owned the steamboat RIVER QUEEN (formerly the CAPE GIRARDEAU / GORDON C. GREENE) when it was a restaurant at Hannibal and St. Louis. He also purchased the Str. MISSISSIPPI when she was sold at auction in 1963 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Memphis. She, too, was used for a tourist attraction at Hannibal when the RIVER QUEEN was moved back to St. Louis in 1964. The MISSISSIPPI was sold to Frank Pierson in 1966 and also moved back to St. Louis to become the BECKY THATCHER.

Marie also has several other RIVER QUEEN items she's interested in selling.

Serious inquiries only, please. Call Marie at 314-209-0704.
