Default Looking for Campbell Hunt & the Gem City

I am looking for information on Campbell Hunt of Portage Des Sioux (St. Louis area), Missouri. He began his pilot career in 1865. From 1881-1883 he was the pilot of the Gem City with Hi Beedle. At that time the Gem City was owned by the St. Paul/St.Louis Packet Company. I understand it sank once from hitting a rock and then in 1883 burned "at the foot of Barton Street, St. Louis." From approximately 1900-1919 Uncle Campbell was the pilot for the U.S. Light Tender Emily or Lily. He retired in December of 1919 and passed away in February of 1920. He was said at the time of his death to have been the "oldest and last living old river boat pilots of St. Louis."

Campbell was the brother of my g-g-grandfather, George Hunt - sons of William B. & Ellen A. (Kneeland) Hunt. Born 28 Jul 1848 in Griggsville, Pike, Illinois.

I was sent a photocopy of a very old (1898) cover from the Waterways Journal that has photos of the members of the Mississippi & Ohio River Pilots' Society on the cover. The photocopy is very bad, but Campbell's name is listed as photo #5 on the cover.

I have also found reference to Samuel Clemens' having been a passenger on the Gem City on May 13 & 14, 1883 during his Great River Tour.

Could anyone give me information or a clue on the Gem City? I'm looking for proof that Campbell was a pilot for her. Also, where to find a copy of his pilot's certificate and any information on Campbell's career. Photos of the Gem City, the light tender Emily or Lily, and possibly Campbell himself.

Thank you,
Lori (Hunt) Zierden
