I noticed last Sunday that the "Belle of Louisville" was flying the First Navy Jack from her forward mast. I may be way behind, but I had never noticed this before, and seem to remember that the USN Union Jack normally appears there. Anyway, the question I pose is this: was (is) there a code of flag display followed by Western Rivers steamers? I have read a little about the display of flags on warships, which is quite extensively spelled out, and am wondering if merchantmen (and indeed steamboats) have an analogous system.
