Cap'n Alan Bates Day

Big plans were made for work, today, at the Rabbit Hash shipyard, but when we discovered it was Captain Aian L. Bates' special day we had to shut down the operation to celebrate.

HBD Alan. Come on up to the yard for a "taste".

A long and two shorts of the whistle and a delightfully offkey rendition of HAPPY BIRTHDAY played on the callyope for you today Alan! And thanks for your friendship these past 39 years! I always chuckle when I read what you wrote in the autograph book I circulated in the Belle's pilothouse one summer day in 1969: "Best wishes to Keith, who at 15 years is TOO OLD to escape the river!" THANKS!

Here's another BIG Happy Birthday wish to you. And many, many more!

Happy Birthday from a fellow Gemini! My best wishes to you for a great day! By the way, is it still possible to purchase them page by page? He, he, he!

Alan, Jonathan and I also send our birthday greetings to you on this special day. Your kindness and generous assistance in helping us film our NATCHEZ video last month was very much appreciated. We are in the midst of editing all that footage and hope to have the program finished by the end of this month. It will be 40 years ago next week that we first met when you gave my parents and this teenager the cook's tour of the BELLE, after we had lunch at Hasenour's. Now a second generation of die familie Tschiggfrie has had the special treat and good fortune of meeting you and learning about the Western Rivers steamboat from one who knows that creature best. And incidentally, when we wer in New Orleans two weeks ago, the NATCHEZ looked as beautiful as ever!

All the best, Cap'n Bates!
