A Bert Fenn Idea
Bert Fenn was more than a steamboat historian. As president of one of the biggest firms in Tell City, he was also a leading citizen and served on a lot of committees. The Schweizerfest planning committee was one of them. The committee asked for suggestions one year. Bert offered this: fill a dump truck with several barrels of sauerkraut and throw about fifty dollars worth of small change into it. At the announced time the truck would dump the cash and kraut mixture in the street at the corner of Main and Tell, and all the kids in town would dive in to get the money.
The committee refused to do it. They didn't object to the cost of the truck or the kraut, nor did they mind cleaning up the mess afterward. They simply could not bear the thought of wasting all that good sauerkraut!
