The Commission, in order to commemorate the Hudson and Champlain Quadricentennial and Fulton Bicentennial in 2009, will engage the public as well as civic, educational, environmental, cultural and heritage organizations to develop and support related plans and activities including creation of infrastructure benefiting future generations, and will focus local, state, national and international attention on the history, culture and natural resources of New York State.

Although The SAUGERTIES FULTON STEAMBOAT FOUNDATION has become dormant. I have maintained my interest in the Fulton steamboat, the North River of CLERMONT. Originally the plan was to build a replica of the North River to coincide with the Hudson-Fulton-Champlain Quadricentennial. Financially that's not going to happen. As an alternative I am looking into building a 3/8 scale model, possibly with a working steam engine.

I continue to research and draw a 3D solids model in CAD. At present I am recreating a model based on the IDEAL Toy Co. plastic model from the early 60's. I ralize that it may not be 100% accurate but it will give me a little bit better perspective of the relationship of dimensions. The beauty of CAD is that the modelling can be easily changed as you gather more accurate information.

I recently got possession of a 1933 drawing for the Steamboat the "CLERMONT" created by Boucher Inc. They apparently made a wooden kit.

I researched the Boucher Inc. company and learned that the were purchased by Bluejacket Shipcrafters in Maine. I asked them about building a scale model for the Quadricentennial. Their charge for a 1/4 scale (approx 37.5" OAL) is $8000.00 which includes the model, glass display case and brass plaque. Hopefully, I'll find a donor who will come forth and be willing to underwrite a model.

In the meantime I am continuing my digital modelling.

The attached photos: 1st: the skeleton of the 1909 Clermont replica in Kingston, NY (Photo by G. Bischoff), 2nd: sketch taken from IDEAL instruction sheet, 3rd: my digital model of the propulsion system

If anyone has info that you think will be of value to my project please contact me. THX

Saugerties Night Line

The attached photo is of the Saugerties Steamboat. It was formerly the Shanandoah brought up from the South and renamed. She made night trips between Saugerties, NY and NYC, carrying passengers and freight. In the foreground is Bluestone mined in the area and waiting for distribution via the Hudson.

The other PC's are of the Saugerties Harbor from different angles. Again you can see the bluestone operation in th background.
