Help is still needed in the effort to SAVE THE DELTA QUEEN

This was posted on facebook last week. Several people "liked" it, but no one confirmed that they had made any phone calls. Hopefully the "real" steamboaters are still monitoring this site. So PLEASE help in our effort:

You can Help SAVE THE DELTA QUEEN! We're at 33 co-sponsors, but we need more bi-partisan support for H. R. 619 in the U.S. House of Representatives. Researching H.R. 1961 which passed the House in September, 2013, reveals there were 58 Democrats that are still in office that voted YES for the exemption. Who better to help us this time than someone who already voted YES. Sixteen of those Representatives are from river states. So if you live or have family and friends who live in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Alabama, or Kentucky, below are the names and phone numbers of the Representatives that voted YES in 2013. We need their help now. We need your help now. They need to be contacted and strongly encouraged to co-sponsor H. R. 619. So PLEASE call, fax or email and ask your family and friends to call, fax or email too. And remember to SHARE, so that word gets out quickly. Thank you very much. OHIO: Joyce Beatty 202-225-4324, Marcy Kaptur 202-225-4146, Tim Ryan 202-225-5261, PENNSYLVANIA: Robert Brady 202-225-4731, Matthew Cartwright 202-225-5546, MISSOURI: Emanuel Cleaver 202-225-4535, ILLINOIS: Cheri Bustos 202-225-5905, Danny Davis 202-225-5006, Robin Kelly 202-225-0773, IOWA: David Loebsack 202-225-6576, MINNESOTA: Betty McCollum 202-225-6631, Rick Nolan 202-225-6211, Tim Walz 202-225-2472, Collin Peterson 202-225-2165, ALABAMA: Terri Sewell 202-225-2665, KENTUCKY: John Yarmuth 202-225-5401

This is the second list posted last night. Lots of "likes", but again, no one said I picked up the phone and made the call. Please do your part, no matter where you live, this is a national effort and you do make a difference.

The effort to SAVE THE DELTA QUEEN continues. Last week I listed names and numbers of Representatives from river states who had voted yes for H.R. 1961 when the exemption for the DELTA QUEEN passed the House. There are several other states who had Representatives who voted yes. Listed below are some more of them. So if you live in any of these states or know someone that does, please call these numbers in their Washington offices.
Since they voted yes before, please ask them to co-sponsor H. R. 619 now: FLORIDA: Kathy Castor 202-225-3376, Alcee Hastings 202-225-1313, Frederica Wilson 202-225-4506, VIRIGNIA: Gerald Connoly 202-225-1492, MICHIGAN: John Conyers 202-225-5126, TEXAS: Henry Cuellar 202-225-1640, Sheila Jackson-Lee 202-225-3816, Eddie Bernice Johnson 202-225-8885, Marc Veasey 202-225-9897, Filemon Vela 202-225-9897 HAWAII: Tulsi Gabbard 202-225-4906, Colleen Hanabusa 202-225-2726, WASHINGTON: Derek Kilmer 202-225-5916, Rick Larsen 202-225-2605, NEW MEXICO: Ben Lujan 202-225-6190, Michelle Lujan 202-225-6316, NEW HAMPSHIRE: Ann Kuster 202-225-5206, Carol Shea-Porter 202-225-5456, MASSACHUETTS: Stephen Lynch 202-225-8273, Niki Tongas 202-225-3411 MARYLAND: C.A. Still Calling

I call about once a week. His office is at least getting to know me. lol

What a shame. I'll tell you what I did after the last session ended. One of my Indiana Senators was uncooperative and was not running for office again. I called his office the last day and let them know what I thought of him. At least I felt better.

As many Representatives will be visiting their home areas the next few weeks, if it is at all possible, it would be helpful if as many of you as possible could schedule a visit with him or her in one of their local offices to ask for support of H.R. 619. If you can't schedule a visit - at least call their local office in hopes of getting an ear there to pass along your support of H. R. 619. Thank you very much!

We just gained co-sponsor #40. We could still use more. If you have or if you haven't contacted your congressman it's not too late. PLEASE contact them and ask for their support by co-sponsoring H. R. 619. To find out if your Congressman has co-sponsored, just type in H. R. 619 115 - that will take you to the House page of the bill, click on co-sponsors for the list. If your Congressman's name appears please call and thank them for their support. Thank you for your continued efforts.

*I'm helping but 'questions' being asked*
Morning, Steamboating colleagues,
Thanks, Jo Ann, for the reminder above. This I have been doing over the summer--AGAIN for how many times I can't remember dating back to Betty Blake's initiative working on her committee. I've pulled out a number of Betty's fine press kits and communications here showing what she [And her committee and friends] did back then. There will never be another Betty Blake.

I do think it important that I mention having received several return communications from our congressional reps by phone and E=Mail with probing questions of their own. Let's not take it for granted these people are not going to question certain aspects of the initiative asking for, "added information, insights from you strictly 'off the record.'" And again several reps aren't clear thinking the DELTA QUEEN is similar to other 'museum vessels' in the public domain. This I responded with information. One has directly asked me "Who are the people directly in control of owning the boat at present and why haven't we heard from them? We seem to hear from 2nd and 3rd interested parties...a lobbyist for other interests is not illegal." I leave the rest up to you all. In addition, as mentioned earlier, if you live just one inch outside of a representatives district your letter and E=Mail is promptly ignored or returned. With another representative, I had my E=Mail to him returned with me finally printing it off here, sending by regular U.S. Mail in an envelope signed, sealed, stamped. We shall see. I'll give it one more old college try and that's it. No negativity or criticism here just being observations.

We are now in the first week of October with the year quickly passing, congress with mounting serious issues and initiatives on their desks and minds. I attended a local Cincinnati issue meeting here yesterday and was amazed at the work load some of these representatives say they have pilled up, waiting. Make no mistake. This issue is not going to be a shoo in. Again, I may not know much but I know what I'm seeing and hearing. Cheers!

Dale,

Thanks for the post, the feedback is helpful. As one of the owners of the Delta Queen, I can attest we have all been working diligently on lobbying for the Delta Queen on the hill. Considering there is only a few of us who own and "directly control" the boat, we have had to focus our lobbying efforts on a strategic number of members of Congress. Hence the push to have all of the Delta Queen's dedicated supporters also continue to contact members of Congress to broaden our reach.

We have owned the Delta Queen now for a little over two years, and have made significant headway towards the exemption and a detailed restoration plan, with some limited work already underway. None of us are independently wealthy individuals, nor are any of us "out to get rich" off the boat, if we were we'd have picked an easier project. This has been a labor of love, with countless thousands of our own dollars poured into the purchase, towing, security, maintenance, consultants, insurance, etc. It leaves very little for high powered professional lobbying.

In order to help us reach our collective goal, I would encourage any of you to direct your Representatives directly to us to answer any questions. We'd be elated to have the opportunity to further the Delta Queen's message and story to any listening congressional staffer. As you pointed out, due to our Zip Code or Area Code, often we have trouble getting them to take our calls. If you all can be the intermediary to open the door and allow that conversation to happen, we're one step closer.

JoAnn Schoen is an excellent example of this, as she has gone above and beyond "shaking the trees" for the Delta Queen, and on several occasions has enabled us to be able to have that one on one conversation with reps who otherwise would not return our calls. The vastly larger number of Co-sponsors on HR 619 than any other previous attempt is directly a result of such efforts.

So in closing, I ask that we all continue the fight, keep making contact with your representatives, and if they need any additional information please direct them to us. I'll gladly take the time to inform anyone who wants the information (phillip@dqsteamboat.com).

I knows its been a long road, but I still feel very confident the Delta Queen has a bright future.

Regards,

Phillip Johnson
