I just read an article (link posted) from a local Memphis paper about the so far ill fated redevelopment of the Beal St landing. Now, maybe it's because I have not finished my coffee, but it seemed to me that the author started out against further redevelopment, due to the lack of steamboats, and then ends up supporting it. Like I said - not enough caffeine yet so I'll have to re-read it.
But the point is that this is an example of the Rubics Cube-like effect the fate of the steamboats engenders. Memphis is a very cool city and one of my favorite ports but she is still in relative hard times. One only needs to see all those empty storefronts along the main downtown streets to realize this. I'm not saying steamboats can bring her back, but NO steamboats certainly is not helping.
And, for the record, for my taste, anyway, the Beal St landing was a lot more convenient than Mud Island.
