Alan's description of a steamboat's condition in winter certainly fits today's Belle to a "T". Even with a few winters under my belt, I still catch myself looking around the engine and boiler room (especially since we've sprinkled the boiler room with soot from cleaning the tubes) trying to convince myself that she was ever under steam or will do so again! Even the first time we light a burner is still a strange sight, especially when the paint on the decks, equipment, and bulkheads show's winter's rough touch, though she may be scrubbed spotless. Once those burners are lit, it's hard to go about the business fitting the Belle out when you rush past the boiler room and give in to the urge to rest your hands on those boiler drums or the breaching to feel that first bit of warmth--a wonderful thought on such a frigid day in the Ohio valley!
