"Steamin' on the Delta Queen" video
This 8 minute video says it all! It ought to be shown during the next session of Congress, as it may melt a few hearts. How could anyone want to put an end to something like this?

Very, very nice video...

I will admit, a lot of misty eyes, Deb and me both, in New York lately... What is it, age or lack of testosterone, that makes me get wet eyes, especially hearing Tony playing the calliope (Gawd, isn't he one of the masters, him and Jazzou, wonderful stuff, like a fine wine?)? Or is it us tearing up over Majestic America Line having the very recent, predicted but serious corporate brain fart...just kidding, love you big fellas, wink wink, nudge nudge, know what I mean? I did spell out your company name fully, at least I didn't use the initials that you guys have nightmares with...what IS it with you guys? You can't realize how friggin' important the Delta Queen is? Want a clue? Just type in Delta Queen vs. Mississippi Queen vs. American Queen into Google Images, check out the amount of returns...Hell, type them into eBay, too...How many books have been written about your "flagship"?

Let me give you a clue...The Delta Queen... She IS your cash cow, I know you don't think so right now...but I know you guys have bean counter types, types with pleated pants and pedicures that have never been within 500 miles of the DQ, the types that are paid the big bucks to make the numbers look anyway you want them to, I suspect one of them can figure it out...

And Oberstar talking about a "747"... What the hell does that have anything to do with it? I'll ask the respected representative from Minnesota the big bal-s question...Does a passenger carrying, vintage 60 year old DC-3 or a 35 year old DC-9 (which Northwest is STILL flying) have the same safety requirements as the latest Boeing 747...or 737? Or even 30 year old 747? Did you honestly realize that the "public" IS flying everyday on such non-upgraded and unsafe relics (please notice tongue firmly in cheek here)? And Mr Transportation expert, do you realize that probably half the planes you have flown on in the past ten years have a system that is potentially defective? And the FAA has mandated, by looking at risk analysis, that the planes are to be upgraded slowly, over time, so as to not send the industry down the tubes. Meanwhile the crews have been TRAINED to sucessfully respond to the defect if a particular plane that hasn't been upgraded yet has a problem. Does any of this sound familar, even remotely? Don't respond, the engineer in me already suspects the answer...

Anyways, that's my story and I'm sticking with it...How, in gawd's green earth are we 'sposed to get our 25 timer pins? Maybe the AQ will fill the bill, but I suspect it will be like kissing your sister, and I'm sorry your west coast boats do not hold much of an attraction for us. Any suggestions, anybody? Yes, tonight I'm a little ****ed, but I suspect I'll be better tomorrow and semi-regret this posting...And by friday afternoon in beautiful Ken-Tucky, I'll be very mellow and friendly. But, hey Majestic, 15 big ones a year, every year, until I'm hopefully into drooling age, you know you are kissing that off, and aren't Deb and I your supposed, infamous "affluent" target market...wanna comment? I'm thinking Cruise West or...Riverboat Explorer...and maybe, wait for it, try not to gag, Holland...tonight, yes I'm a little ****ed...

Thanks again Richard, very nice stuff...anything showing the "LEGENDARY" one is eye candy in my book...nothing, NOTHING beats the ol' gal...

Ban away or edit away if this is over the line...

Oh, my--I've been on vacation from the boat since July 26, and that is already 27 days too many--only--what is it, Bruno, eight more to go? I am so homesick! That video was wonderul--it will help me make it through!

Bruno Krause 08-22-2007 09:42 PM

Oh yes, you are so right Mary...

I have been wrapped up in what was coming up this weekend, Deb and I are really excited about it.

But the really big do is sneaking up...

8 days and approximately 14 hours until I can hear that wonderful "THUMP......thump,thump....THUMP...thump,thump" again.

Hot Damn...things are looking up.

Nice comments, Bruno!

I agree. Makes me recall that old saying, "Figures don't lie but liars sure can figure"!

David Dewey 08-23-2007 12:11 AM

Amen brother Bruno, Amen!
OK Gang, we must gird ourselves for battle with Congress--WE MUST WIN ONE FOR THE QUEEN!
And Majestic, I've been on board the AQ, she's nice, but she's no DQ! The DQ feels like Home, the AQ feels like a big floating hotel.
David D.
PS, gonna take me at least a half-hour to download this video--but so far the first 30 seconds are great--oooh that whistle!

David Dewey 08-23-2007 01:42 AM

Hour and a half later, and I'm only at 4 minutes--but lovin' every bit of it. Gonna have to try to download this puppy at the local Gelato shop--they've got high speed wireless there. Gotta catch some zzz's!

The other day I stopped by a local flea market/antique mall and found a dandy placemat with a color photo of the DQ, taken in the 1970's. When I took the item to the checkout counter (the price was 95 cents!) the cashiers looked at it and one of them said, "Ohhhhh, that's the old boat that is going to be tied up because it is so UNsafe!" I politely leaned over the counter and said, "Ladies, I have traveled on the DELTA QUEEN many times and even LIVED aboard it as a crew member -- and there is absolutely NOTHING UNsafe about the boat. In fact, I daresay that the DQ is far safer than the cars you drove to work today!" They were somewhat flabbergasted and I went on to explain the situation. They thanked me for "setting them straight"!

I can't take credit for the video itself (I wish I could), but I found it yesterday while doing a video websearch for the Delta Queen and felt it belonged on this board. I still think it should be shown during the next session of Congress, as it's impossible to be left untouched after watching it.
Richard,

I'm really bragging here, and I apologize, this thread reply is not meant to be that way, but I have everybody's CD's. Tony's, I'll agree is wonderful, deep and very, very soothing. A fall day in upstate New York, the woodburner going, a good glass of wine and Tony's "Time Was"... mmmm, mmmm, nice! And Tony, aren't you 'sposed to be coming out with calliope CD like any day now...?

Both of Jazzou's, Annie's, Bob and Bob's, and Tony's, they're like little pieces of pure magic. And if anybody has a copy of the supposed Mike Gentry CD, contact me, I want it. Does it have Rockytop on it?

But, Deb and I are very, VERY partial, to Walter's CD. As anybody knows that has read my past posts, I'm very attached, almost scary attached to the Riverboat Five ...and/or Four. They are the best, hands down and as a huge plus, all have been good friends to me and Deb. The band's CD has been played from North Carolina to the wilds of upper Canada, I blew fuses playing the bands stuff...and I'm still hearing about it from neighbors. Screw 'em...

What we need to do is convince the band to make a second CD...

Love you guys, 8 days until you play Muscat Ramble for us, we hope...

B. and Deb
