Hotel Recommendations in New Orleans

We could use a little advice as to where to stay in New Orleans and recommended length of stay. The Royal Sonesta Hotel has been suggested to us. Has anyone stayed there or can comment on it. Are there any comparable hotels you could recommend?

Also, thought of spending 3 days in New Orleans prior to our cruise on the MQ in June but some with whom we have talked with post Katrina say that 2 days in New Orleans is plenty. Again, any insight would be greatly appreciated as we're starting to make final plans.
