river expert gone
The very sad news from Marietta is the Joseph Woodson "Woody" Rutter has made his final crossing. Woody served as the S & D Board Chairman for many years, then assumed the office of President for almost twenty more. Woody took over S &D from his father-in-law Capt. Fred Way. He also was the Editor of the Reflector and was a fountain of knowledge as to steamboat history. In my case he was my mentor as I assumed the position of Board Chairman. The entire steamboat history, museums, library's, and writers who relied on Woody's sage advice will miss him greatly.

I am very sorry to hear this, and I send my deepest sympathy to Bee and the rest of the family.

*RE: 'Woody' Rutter's passing at age 94*
Morning, Streamboating colleagues:
Thanks to Capt. Bill Judd, and others, for posting above RE: death of J.W. 'Woody' Rutter at age 94. Though expected, Woody's letters to me over the years were a pleasure to read. Woody wrote 'real' letters on paper tucked in an envelope with a postage stamp. I took the liberty to add other names to Fred Rutter's initial message to us to spread the word. The sad part is that Woody's son, Dick Rutter, now a patient himself in a California nursing facility due to cancer. The mention of "no service or memorial" what I would expect from Woody. Farwell Woody. Have a fine trip.

Summer: R. Dale Flick on the northern shores of mighty Lake Michigan.
