CITY OF NEW ORLEANS

Matt Dow posted a pix on Facebook of the new name on the former Casino Rock Island. This was the name his grandfather Capt. Wilbur Dow announced at S&D back in 1990 for a dinner boat which did not get off the drawing board then. But the name has survived for this soon-to-be dinner boat/charter. Matt has been flying back and forth between Wood River and NOLA in anticipation of riding the CNO as she is being towed to NOLA and her Industrial Canal spot for her renovation, and it appears today is finally the day she'll be leaving. So this is the third UMR gambling boat being repurposed as a functioning boat, by my count (Emerald Lady/Belle of Cincinnati, Mississippi Belle II/Savannah something...and the Casino Rock Island/City of New Orleans).

What about the boat the American Queen folks are converting into an overnight boat, the AMERICAN DUCHESS? Wasn't it an ex-gambling boat?

Judy Patsch 02-03-2017 10:07 PM

Yep

Yep, that was the ISLE OF CAPRI in Bettendorf. Are they working on it yet over there?
The Davenport dump went to Memphis, but I don't believe it was to run but rather be a dockside event center.

The boat at Memphis has run into problems with the city. They don't like the way it looks. There has been a thread on Facebook about it.

Judy Patsch 02-04-2017 11:04 AM

Oh really???

They don't like the way it looks????Goodness gracious, what's wrong with a windowless white rectangle??? That needs paint....that has no obvious pilothouse.....that has no smokestacks.......that trashed the Davenport riverfront for 16 years! Its so bad I don't think I ever took a picture of it!

The CNO is really moving

Matt Bubba Dow is on board the WiNCHESTER which is towing the CNO and he reports they have just passed Cape Girardeau. They left Mike's early last evening.

Judy Patsch 02-04-2017 05:13 PM

The CNO is AHP now...

Matt Dow reported passing the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi, so they are now on the Lower, heading toward her new home base.

Bob Reynolds 02-04-2017 06:08 PM

Judy -- didn't you learn anything from Capt. Rip Ware? That's the CONFUSION of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers! ;-)

Judy Patsch 02-04-2017 11:14 PM

OOPs...

Oh yeah, how could I forget??? Speaking of confusion, I'm sharing your link on here about the dump that Davenport finally got rid of and which now Memphis doesn't want. It has to be the ugliest gambling structure ever built! Hard to believe they didn't see a pix of it before it came to town. There went the neighborhood!!

The City of New Orleans is a beautiful vessel. It will do quite well in NOLA. Now that boat the American Queen company bought runs a close second to the Davenport fiasco. Now the rumor here in Cinti is that a certain person has bought, reportedly the Diamond Lady, and is going to rebuild it. Somewhere this market is going to be so crowded that some are going to get really hurt and go under. It seems the DQ's chances get worse and worse.

Repurposed gambling boats.

I helped finance the maintenance of the CRI - at least in her first years when she was cruising. After that, not very often, and now that they are landbased, never. Yes, the old Isle of Capri is a flat boxy thing. It will be interesting to see if AQ changes her lines at all. I've heard it both ways, that they are using the current superstructure and modifying it and that they are tearing it down to the hull and starting over. The Davenport dump was the worst thing up here, but there were a couple in NOLA that would have vied for Ugliest Boat Ever Built too. Dale and others maintain there is a market for expensive overnight stay all day in port boats on the Mississippi, but I just don't see it for the number of boats that are being repurposed. But anything to keep Viking out I think might be the plan... do you hear anything about La Louisiane? She ran a couple of trips then laid up. Doc was on the first one and was to do pretrip talks for them, but that hasn't happened yet.
I haven't checked Matt's report on Facebook yet today, but they should be below Natchez already, aiming for a Wednesday night arrival in NOLA. I don't know if they will stop at Bienville or go straight into the Industrial Canal for her renovation work, which includes much on the pilothouse...

I met the WINCHESTER, with the CITY OF NEW ORLEANS in tow, about 9:00 last night below Sunshine Bridge. If the fog didn't get them, they should be in NOLA by now...

The CRI/CNO arrived in New Orleans

The CITY OF NEW ORLEANS came through the New Orleans harbor shortly after noon yesterday Feb. 8, 2017 and received a whistle salute from her big sister the NATCHEZ as they passed at Press St. She then went through the lock into the Industrial Canal to the Morrison Road shipyard where the interior renovations will be done. No completion date has been set. I was able to watch the passing on the NOLA.com webcam which Franz and Carmen have linked on here. Matt posted the whistle salute from the NATCHEZ and a NATCHEZ crew member posted some great shots of the CNO with Matt waving on the roof on Facebook. I had been watching the two vessels on AIS and could see they would indeed pass each other before the CNO turned off into the canal. As much as I dislike so many aspects of technology, it was a thrill to be able to watch this live even though I'm 1339 river miles away. I am anxious to hear the NATCHEZ' crew reactions to the CNO when they can get down to check her out. Glad to see the CNO make it to her new home, but Nothing Matches the NATCHEZ! :-)

Update on the City of New Orleans

I reread this thread and realized we just left her after she arrived in NOLA. She's been there a bit over two months now and the superstructure renovations are underway. They removed the phony scape pipes and the top deck back room which was added a couple years into her existence. This area will again be open-air and under cover. Both changes improve her looks already. I have pictures on my iPad but I'm typing on my laptop, so I'll post some later. I was aboard her during my recent NOLA trip and revisited my favorite slot machine areas, one of which was by a window looking directly over at the PRESIDENT in Davenport. At least I got a good view as I donated to the cause. No date for the completion of the conversion is set, but hopes are for availability for next year's French Quarter Festival...

I spoke with Capt. Hawley yesterday, and he reported an interesting fact. The HVAC on the CoNO is exposed now and that in the duct work there were places where the nicotine and cigarette smoke put between an eighth of an inch and a quarter inch of scum on the interior surfaces. Just think of what it does to a smoker's lungs. Don't worry, when the boat comes out next year that tobacco residue will be G-O-N-E gone!

Judy Patsch 04-18-2017 10:01 PM

Smoke scum

Yes, I saw some of those places the day I was aboard. Her ventilation system was not very good, to say the least. Even in the nonsmoking area you could sniff it easily. The PREZ was so much better for us nonsmokers. And the red drapes that the CRI had - Matt tore those down as they worked their way downriver from Mikes, what smoke repositories they were. The whole boat has been stripped to the bulkheads, so none of our QC air will be left!
