Default A QUINLAN connection

My father rode the QUINLAN a lot and told me quite a bit about it, and as a kid we would take a quick drive down to Sunset Park, the river, and along Mill St. to see the decrepit old ferry rotting away in the Kahlke Boatyard. Dad also rode the CAPITOL and PRESIDENT on their UMR tramping trips. He would take my sister and me on the WJQ's replacement, the little diesel TRANSIT, once a week over to Davenport and back. He took us down to the levee to listen to the nightly AVALON calliope concerts and then we'd ride the Sunday afternoon trip. We also went down to that levee every night of the DQ's 1954 layup. So my river blood comes from him. After I started riding the DQ, he and Mom made 3 trips of their own on her, and he'd go with me to chase her, and later the MQ, as they came through here. If I got offered a lock hop, I'd toss my keys to him and he'd meet me at the next lock. I was hoping he'd make it to see the PREZ return here, but he died a year too early for that. Anyway the reason I'm recalling this stuff today is because it is his birthday, Feb. 13 - sandwiched among T.A. Edison, Lincoln, and Valentine's Day...
