It is my very sad duty to report that Capt. Alan L. Bates passed peacefully away in his sleep early this new year's morning.

I just received a phone call from Alan and Rita's granddaughter, who asked me to convey that, following cremation, Alan's ashes will be interred privately. A celebration of life reception will be held at a later date to be announced.

A long and two shorts of the whistle in tribute and gratitude to a consummate riverman, good friend and mentor to many, who did so much to preserve and promote our steamboating and river heritage.

My love and sympathy to dear Rita and all of Alan's family.
