Many have inquired about our dear friend and mentor, Capt. Alan Bates. Today Yvonne and I were honored to have son Larry Bates (who lives in Michigan) visit the museum. He had not been here in many years and it was poignant to hear him reminisce about his childhood visits with Capt. Jim and Loretta Howard when his dad brought him and his sister to call at the mansion in the 1950's.

Sad to report, Alan is now unable to talk on the phone or to receive visitors. Rita is doing OK and will observe her 90th birthday next month. The family greatly appreciates the concern of river friends and their continued prayers.
