Steamboating colleagues:
An unexpected surprise last evening meeting, talking with noted marine artist [steamboats, sailing ships, harbors, ports] British born John Stobart last night as a guest at the Literary Club of Cincinnati. John had been in Cincinnati for a series of lectures on his art and technique in tandem with renowned John Ruthven, famed for his naturalist paintings of birds, animals. Stobart, a sprightly Britisher, recalled fondly meeting, writing, visiting Capt. Fred Way, Jr. during his research on steamboats at 121 River Avenue, Sewickley, PA. Those of you familar with Stobart's work owning some of his prints recall his renditions of Cincinnati, Marietta, Pittsburgh, J.M. WHITE, ROBT. E. LEE just to name a few.
Over dinner Stobart recalled "Mrs. Frye of Cincinnati [This our own Dorothea Frye] her own excellent steamboat paintings in minute detail." I related to him Dorothea's death some years back, what a loss she was. He also recalled the sage S&D REFLECTOR with several of his paintings receiving full page display. Frank Prudent and others here own Stobart signed works.
