Default Passage on a Tow

I have been reading about container ships that will take less than 12 passengers (no requirement for medical personnel etc) from their current port to their upcoming ports of call. If you have the money, you can even stay long enough for a round trip. They are advertised as for people that are not rich (no entertainment, soot and grime on whatever you wear), but have the money and time. If the ship arrives ahead of schedule, no refund or extra charge. The same goes if they are late.

Does anyone know if this is possible in an organized or informal way on the rivers?
