Default Live from the Louisville Levee

Much activity on the Louisville waterfront this morning as preparations are underway to salvage two sunken iron ore barges that sank last Friday afternoon as they were upbound in the tow of an Ingram Company towboat and broke free after the rigging apparently let go while shoving against the heavy current. A brief period of high water has caused a delay in starting the salvaging operations.

The Str. BELLE OF LOUISVILLE has been moved to a temporary landing near McAlpine Locks, as the sunken barges are very close to her usual mooring place. Cruises on the BELLE have been cancelled or moved to the SPIRIT OF JEFFERSON.

Another "fender bender" occurrred when an upbound tow of 12 barges lost steering and hit the wall near Joe's Crab Shack Restaurant on Monday at 3:50 AM.

Things often happen in "threes", and at 4:00 AM Tuesday a third tow with 15 loaded coal barges hit the two submerged barges. Two of the coal barges were damaged but were patched and did not sink. This was also attributed to loss of steering.

Thank goodness the BELLE was not hit by any of these runaway barge accidents!

The salvaging of the sunken barges, once the plan (submitted by Ingram) is approved by the Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers (hopefully by noon today) is expected to take 7 to 10 days, depending upon river conditions. With all the freaky storms and flooding happening in the region, it's anybody's guess as to what the river stages will be from day to day.
