Default Happy Birthday to Capt. Alan Bates!

A long and two shorts of the whistle to Capt. Alan Bates today on a "milestone" birthday!

All the best to you Alan, and THANKS for being a mentor to so many of us. I treasure what you wrote in my autograph book when I circulated it in the pilothouse of the BELLE one summer day in 1969: "Best wishes to Keith, who at 15 years old is TOO OLD to escape the river!"

Keep up steam!

Keith

P.S. The photo herewith is taken atop the pilothouse of the Streckfus excursion steamer WASHINGTON, at Madison, Indiana.
