It's funny the questions they now ask are worded obviously to "get a reaction" as they have little to do with security or duty on goods and you typically don't expect those type of questions. Some that I remember are "What do you do for a living?" and "Where did you grow up?"

Years ago, I took a weekend trip to Montreal. We drove up from Cape Cod. Had a great time. Had never been out of the country before that and didn't know quite what to expect at the border. Getting into Canada was a breeze.
Coming back, we were asked by the US Customs officials to pull my van over for an inspection of its contents. No problem, but I did wonder what all the hub bub was about, until....... I stood outside my van during the inspection and noticed my bumper sticker.....
"Support the arts. Kiss a musician"
Hmmmm a little profiling I would suspect.
