BELLE Gets New Pitman
This week, with assistance from a crane, a new 1100 pound pitman was installed on the starboard side of the Str. BELLE OF LOUISVILLE's paddlewheel to replace one that was a decade old and deteriorating. Trucked here from California, the solid Douglas fir part is 23 feet long and 2 feet in diameter. Louisville Lumber did the work which cost about $12,000. The port side pitman was replaced last year.
According to Capt. Mark Doty, a complete rebuilding of the Belle's sternwheel is on the agenda for next winter and will cost about $30,000.
