Capt. Frederick Way, Jr. -- In Memoriam
Today marks the 15th anniversary of the passing of Capt. Fred Way. Upon receiving news of Capt. Fred's departure (at age 91) in 1992, Capt. Don Sanders, then a resident of Natchez, went to Stanton Hall (a stately downtown mansion) where the roof bell of Capt. Fred's famous steamboat BETSY ANN resides in the rear garden. He gave it three taps in memory of Capt. Fred, one of the most beloved steamboat captains of all time. Now, whenever I visit Natchez, I go to Stanton Hall and repeat Capt. Don's thoughtful tribute. To many of us, Capt. Fred was the "Pope" of the river and his home at 121 River Avenue in Sewickley was often referred to as "The Vatican of Steamboating"! He was truly an amazing man!
