Flooding on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers
1 Attachment(s)
As many of you know, the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers are flooding. In fact, this week, some levees near Kansas City have failed. The flood waters are expected to crest this weekend at Washington, Hermann, and St. Charles on the Missouri. The river at St. Louis is also on the rise, as a result. The water is lapping over the curb and onto the Wharf Street. The downtown flood gates are in place and closed. We're nowhere close to a flood like in 1993 or 1995, but it is the most significant in years.

Here is a picture of the Lewis and Clark monument on the St. Louis Riverfront, as it looked on May 8. This is what it normally looks like. Below, I have included a photo of what it looks like today. A friend of mine sent me a cell phone photo of the statue. It's not a great photo, but it shows how the statue is almost completely under water.

Hi Darin,

Looks like hes drowning :-).

And we are still longing for some rain. We do have a drought and the rivers are quite low. It rained last week for one day. But Im still not sure about our Elbe river cruise in 2 weeks. The water levels at Dresden did go up a bit but are falling again.

Yes, that's what my friend said to me when they sent me the photo from their phone. The statue is probably completely under water now, as the water has been slowly rising over the past few days, and we had a burst of rain here yesterday.

I hope your Elbe River cruise takes place as expected. That would be unfortunate if it was cancelled.
