Early MQ pictures
Here are 3 shots of her, pre supergluedon rooms. 1) Taken in Natchez, April 1978. Anyone who reads the board knows I'm not a fan of the MQ's lines, but she certainly looked smoother and not disjointed without those rooms. Also note that you can actually see the pilothouse - it was not built up to begin with, but once those 2 rooms were plopped in front of it, it became nearly impossible to find. This is rarely discussed, but those rooms caused an arc of about 300 feet around the bow to be blocked from the pilot's line of vision, hence in close passing/manuevering situations(12/12/85), someone was supposed to be out on the bridge to assist the pilot. So removing those rooms would not only add deck space, but would increase the safety of the boat. 2) taken on Christmas Day 1983 in Natchez. Look closely and you'll see icicles on the fantail. It was 28 degrees and I was Jr. Activities Director for that week, obviously doing all indoor activities with the kids! 3) Taken in June 1979 somewhere above Muscatine Iowa. Look at that wonderful walking area, all around the 5th deck! I believe it took 8 laps for a mile. In addition to giving this walking/sitting/viewing area on the Promenade Deck, you could also see the scenery from the top deck poolside. Now the rooms obscure that view too. Incidentally, I believe the idea to remove these offending rooms came from many and constant passenger criticisms of lack of deck/walking space. So here is a wonderful example of a win-win situation by listening to your customers: the passengers will get their desired space and Majestic America Line will be able to reduce its room inventory to easier fill their boats.
