A beacon maintained by the government for aiding pilots at night. Each one is provided with a number and has an official name; for instance Light No. 147.4 on the Ohio River is Petticoat Bar Light and is 147.4 miles from Pittsburgh. Some are oil lantern lights, others are electric lights and may show white, green or red, while still others emit periodic flashes or double flashes.
