The Delta Queen in Houma

Posted 04-28-2015 at 07:47 PM by Capt Mike
Greetings, from Houma, Louisiana, live aboard the Steamer Delta Queen. Well, they said it couldn't be done, but here she is. After an amazing 15 day journey we finally got the Delta Queen tucked safely into a dead end slip just south of the intercoastal waterway. Our epic journey south out of Chattanooga is the subject of a documentary now under production and hopefully will be released in a couple of months. It was an incredible experience, being on board the Delta Queen underway again. The 3 of us on board wouldn't even have known we were under tow unless you looked way back 150 feet to the towboat behind us...For me it was almost a spiritual experience, working around the old boat, feeling the familiar vibrations and sounds of her underway. Sadly missing were the sounds of laughter, the tinkling of champagne glasses, the shouts of crewmembers and the twang of banjo chords and piano music drifting out of the Texas Lounge... We will soon share share much of that experience with you via 1080 High Definition video...
The old boat lies safely secured in a dead end slip, safe from passing traffic or rising tides. There is very little change in the water level here, yet she slowly shifts back and forth like a mare in a stall in response to passing tow boats some quarter mile north up in the canal. The surrounding area abounds with small and mid sized shipyards and supply docks, with everything we need for a boat at arms length. The locals have been very gracious and welcoming, and it is good to be back in the warm embrace of the deep south...
We have begun, probing, exploring and planning the extensive repair and restoration that will be needed to bring the boat back to pristine condition, a big task but one that I and a few others have done many times before. My years on passenger steamboats with the Streckfus Line, the Admiral, the President, and numerous excursion boats were I feel preparing me for the task to which the Delta Queen has summoned me. With the sincere commitment and dedication of a few core believers who have steadfastly refused to give up, we will continue to work forward to achieve what some still do not believe is possible; to overcome the financial and political obstacles before us, to restore and revive the vessel back into full operation, so that the children of the small river towns and big cities alike will be able to see, hear, and touch the last of the real over night steamboats in America, and that she shall not have perished on our watch!
