*Where just is Deception Bay, N. Canada?*
Steamboating colleagues:
Okay, a question here by E=Mail as to "Just where is Deception Bay, N. Canada?" Not steamboats as such but part of the saga on how a company can rise and fall. Follow the 'paper chase' with the current holding companies and you'll learn a lot. Follow the money and you'll learn even more.
Former CAPE MAY LIGHT deployed to Deception Bay at Lat: 62.17 N./Long. 74.45 W. in the Arctic north of Hudson Bay. Due east is the Labrador Sea and Greenland. One forbidding location where the summer is short and adventurers hunt or fish for their breakfast. The port formerly shipped out asbestos until that product banned for obvious reasons. There's also heavy mining for copper and nickel; thus the aging port is being expanded, deepened. 'Deception Bay' one of several. The above named by early Northwest Passage explorers who came to grief and tragedy seeing the water route to the Pacific. Read about the ill-fated Franklin Expedition from England and you'll see why. No Gulf Stream moderating currents there.
I've been in those waters of the Labrador Sea along with flying over. Even in high summer the Labrador Sea is the funnel for Arctic/Greenland ice packs, bergs, 'growlers' flowing by current south at a faster pace than you'd expect. The TITANIC found this out April, 1912. I trust the CAPE MAY LIGHT is well insulated with a good heating plant. Brrrrrrrrr. Well, what do I know?
